Marc My Words - May 2006
by Marc Lederman, RVC Region 2

Region 2's Leadership Development Workshop (LDW) will take place in King of Prussia, Pennsylvania, on May 12 and 13. More than two dozen people already have signed up and there's still room for more. Our hospitality suite will be open Friday evening from 6 PM until midnight. There are no programs set for Friday evening, but if you decide to come down early, you can join us for pizza and an evening of networking and socializing.

Saturday morning begins with continental breakfast in our hospitality suite at 8 AM. Programming will run from 8:45 AM until 6 PM. Our list of programs and speakers has been set and includes:

  • "Getting Involved at the Regional, National or International Level" by Dave Remine, former American Mensa Chair and former Mensa International Chair;
  • "ExCom Basics" by Sallie Banko, former Region 2 RVC and former American Mensa First Vice Chairman;
  • "Developing Mensa Publicity Tools" by Don Pendley, former American Mensa Development Officer;
  • "Dealing with Problem Members" by Allen Neuner, former American Mensa Ombudsman;
  • "Basics of Your Proctor Network and Testing Program" by Yvonne Brownlee and Sallie Banko; and
  • "Gatherings" by Jan Foley and Margaret (Peggy) Scherbina.

Registration is free and lunch in the hotel restaurant is included. An LDW is a great way to meet with and learn from, past, present, and future leaders of Mensa. This is an event for everybody, not just officers. Anybody wishing to attend must email me (rvc2@us.mensa.org) by April 30, to let me know you'll be attending.

In August, American Mensa will be celebrating Mensa's 60th birthday in Orlando at the World Gathering (WG). At last count, 1,298 people have registered, including 111 from Region 2. There already are 210 programs scheduled, and dozens more are expected before the schedule is finalized. I hope to see many of you there, August 8-13, 2006, at the Coronado Springs Hotel. The current registration rate of $80 for members and $90 for non-members has been extended until May 15. More information about the WG can be found at their website, wg06.us.mensa.org.

I have recently approved two Regional Gatherings (RGs) for our region later this year. Delaware Valley Mensa will be hosting Liberty Bell XVI in King of Prussia, Pennsylvania, from October 13 through October 15. Tidewater and Richmond Area Mensa will be hosting Mensalot in historic Williamsburg, Virginia, from November 10 through November 12.

Every two years, American Mensa holds an election for the American Mensa Committee (AMC). The AMC consists of five national officers, ten regional officers (RVCs), four appointed officers, and the two most recent past chairmen. The Nominating Committee (NomCom) has formed and they will soon start looking for candidates. The members are eligible to run for, and vote for, the five national offices and RVC for their region. In the last election, our region only voted in three of the six races because the other three were uncontested. I'd love to see all six races contested this time because the membership deserves a choice. If you agree, please talk to people you think would make a good AMC member and ask them to run for office.
