Marc My Words - April 2006
by Marc Lederman, RVC Region 2

Region 2's Leadership Development Workshop (LDW) will take place in King of Prussia, Pennsylvania, on May 12 and 13. Our hospitality suite will be open Friday evening from 6 PM until midnight. There are no programs set for Friday evening. This gives our attendees who wish to arrive early a chance to unwind, network, and socialize.

Saturday morning begins with continental breakfast in our hospitality suite at 8:00 AM. Programming will run from 8:45 AM until 6:00 PM. Our list of programs and speakers has been set and includes:

  • "Getting Involved at the Regional, National or International Level" by Dave Remine, former American Mensa Chair and former Mensa International Chair;
  • "ExCom Basics" by Sallie Banko, former Region 2 RVC and former American Mensa First Vice Chairman;
  • "Developing Mensa Publicity Tools" by Don Pendley, former American Mensa Development Officer;
  • "Dealing with Problem Members" by Allen Neuner, former American Mensa Ombudsman;
  • "Basics of Your Proctor Network and Testing Program" by Yvonne Brownlee and Sallie Banko; and
  • "Gatherings" by Jan Foley and Margaret (Peggy) Scherbina.

We will have socializing and networking in the evening for those who wish to stay. Registration is free and lunch in the hotel restaurant is included. An LDW is a great way to meet with and learn from, past, present, and future leaders of Mensa. This is an event for everybody, not just officers. Anybody wishing to attend must email me (rvc2@us.mensa.org) by April 30, to let me know you'll be attending.

Do you have any friends or family members you think are Mensa material? During the month of April, Mensa is waiving the usual $30 fee to evaluate test scores. Have your friends send in the results of any standardized intelligence test they’ve taken in the past, and we’ll evaluate their scores for Mensa membership for free. American Mensa accepts the results from more than 200 tests. To take advantage of this offer, your friends and colleagues should visit www.us.mensa.org in April and follow the instructions on the home page.

I recently attended Central New Jersey Mensa's Snowball Regional Gathering and had a great time. Jan Foley, Peggy Scherbina, and their numerous committee members made sure everybody was well fed and well entertained. There were 227 attendees. They had three program tracks, a dedicated game room, at least a half dozen hospitality rooms, several bathtubs full of beverages, including my personal favorite Diet Peach Snapple, and so many tables full of food that I lost count. Thank you to everybody who worked to make this an outstanding RG. And if you want to hear more about it, come to our LDW and listen to Jan and Peggy give you the basics on how to run a successful gathering.
