November is here, and sure enough, nothing left but the
mums, the rose, and yellow and brown spotted leaves on things that I haven't
trimmed back yet. My twenty foot tall white pine in the front yard died this
summer, so it's looking oddly vacant out there.
Since my last column, I've been busy! The first order of
business was to attend the AMC meeting in Rhode Island, October 13-15. It was my
first, of course, but thanks to the other AMC members and our wonderful hosts, I
felt like I was right at home. The minutes for that meeting should be released
before most of you are seeing this column.
I've talked to several people who told me how much fun they
had at Liberty Bell that same weekend, and it sounds like I missed out on a
great RG due to scheduling conflicts with the AMC meeting. And believe it or
not, the folks of DVM already have a theme and a tentative date, along with
flyers for early registration, for next year's RG.
I attended MWM's Election Party on October 21, where a good
time (and a good meal!) was had by all. I got to see Marc Lederman hard at work
in the kitchen, whipping up a selection of pasta to serve 100 people.
The last weekend of October, I was at SuperweeM in Chicago. It
was my first WeeM and my husband's first RG. We both had a great time with the
superhero themed costume party there.
This past weekend was Tidewater and Richmond Mensa's Mensalot,
in Williamsburg, VA. They had a sold out RG, since the banquet is part of the
RG registration, and Walter from Delaware Mensa was the fortunate soul who got
the last walk-in slot available. The food was delicious and the play was pure
genius. Thank you, John Treffeison, Author, Assistant Director, and Fool--I
haven't laughed that hard in a long time. And thank you to all of the Pungo
Players and the entire RG committee, I had a wonderful weekend!
We're in the early stages of planning an LDW for next November
in the Virginia area, after the overwhelming success of the one this past spring
in King of Prussia. Stay tuned for more information on that as it develops.
As always, I encourage you all to come out and join us on the
Region 2 e-group. I'll be posting a link to the agenda of the January AMC
meeting in advance, and looking forward to hearing input from folks on the items
up for discussion and voting.
As a result of the press release sent out by the National
Office after the AMC meeting, announcing my appointment as RVC2, two of the
local papers in Delaware decided to do stories about me, and more importantly,
about Mensa. The first was published in the Delaware State News November 12, and
the second is due to be published Wednesday, November 15, in the News Journal.
If you'd like to see a scanned copy of either one, email me at
RVC2@us.mensa.org and I'll be happy to send it as an attachment.
Last but not least, I hope to see many of you at the Winter
Solstice RG in Lancaster, PA, hosted by Central Pennsylvania Mensa, December
15-17.
Until next time,
Leah Kinder
